'Immanuel 150'
Immanuel and St. Andrew's 150th Anniversary.
The first Immanuel Church in Streatham was consecrated on 14th October 1854, and in 2004 Immanuel celebrated its 150th Anniversary. A "Season of Celebration" began at Pentecost, finishing on the Sunday next before Advent (the feast of Christ the King), during which a number of events and activities took place:
- A Community Open Day and Local History Afternoon was held on Saturday 3rd July 2004. This was a joint event with the Streatham Society and formed part of the Streatham Festival. There was a 'Church and Community' exhibition all day, with an open day in the morning when local organisations, users of our hall and others displayed their wares in our hall and, in the afternoon, a series of local history lectures. The exhibition remained on display during the following week. There are some photographs on the Immanuel 150 photos page.
- A commemorative booklet was published describing some of Immanuel's history over the 150 years. It is available, price £3.00 (plus 50p postage if not collected from the church). Contact Jenny Hull or the Parish Office (020 8679 6888) for a copy.
- All living past vicars of Immanuel were invited to come and preach and we enjoyed visits from Revd Canon John Collie (vicar 1962-1968), Revd Leslie Walters (1968-1981), Revd David Ward (1983-1986), Revd David Isherwood (1988-1995) and Revd Simon Butler (1997-2004). We also welcomed Revd Robert de Berry who was born while his late father, Revd Keith de Berry, was vicar (1939-1952). Simon Butler was, of course, still our vicar when the "Season of Celebration" had begun, and he returned on the Feast of Christ the King to 'round off' the celebrations.
- The Anniversary itself was marked on Sunday 10th October with a Children's Service in the morning (at which the speaker was Mark Stafford of the Redthread youth and schools project), a reunion for former members in the afternoon, and a Celebration Eucharist in the evening at which the the President and Preacher was the Bishop of Southwark, Rt Revd Tom Butler. It was good to see a large number of former members at each of these events.
- A Children's Party was held in the hall on October 30th and a Celebration Dinner, provided by a professional caterer, on November 13th.
Following the Celebration Dinner, the Streatham Society presented the church with a 150th Anniversary memento - a set of photos of the three church buildings that had served Immanuel parish since 1854 - the original 1854 building, the enlarged building which served from 1865 to the 1980s and the present building dedicated in 1988. The picture shows Revd Wendy Aird receiving the photos on behalf of the church from Brian Bloice of the Streatham Society.
The PCC also agreed that there would be an emphasis on evangelism during the anniversary year. The council decided the church would be a Partner Church in the just 10 south london Mission with Christian communicator J.John. Earlier in the year in Lent we had a special series of studies with a view both to understanding better the basics of the Christian faith and being able to communicate them, and later, with a similar aim in view, we held a course based on J.John's book 'Calling Out'.
