More about Immanuel and its faith and ministry.

A Parish Church

Immanuel and St Andrew (usually just called "Immanuel") is a Parish Church of the Church of England in the Diocese of Southwark, UK. It serves a diverse parish in an urban priority area, and the congregation is drawn from a wide variety of walks of life. Ethnic minorities, particularly from African and Caribbean countries, are well represented. It is a church where many have found a welcome, including those who have had little contact with the church prior to coming to Immanuel.

You can view a map showing the Parish boundary from the A Church near You website.

Ministry and Mission: sent to serve

Our principal activity is to worship God, to try to get to know and love him better, and to try to help others to do the same. Prayer, the sacraments and listening to scripture and to teaching about it are some of the ways we get to know God better. Loving God often involves service to one another and the wider community.

Why "Ministry" and "Mission"? These are "church jargon" words - although they are also used by politicians and in business! In practical terms, "Ministry" and "Mission" can mean much the same thing. Both mean "what we do" - but they do bring out different things about it. The word "Ministry" means service, and what we do is aimed at serving - serving God, serving one another, and serving the wider community. But we do this, not just because we think it is a good thing to do, but because Jesus sent us to do it - it is our mission. The word "mission" means something we are sent to do. Jesus said to his disciples, 'As the Father has sent me, so I send you." (John 20:21) - they, and we, are to continue his work of teaching, serving and proclaiming the good news of God's love and grace.

Good News - that's what Jesus' message was - and is - for those willing to receive it. By the grace of God, through Jesus' death on the cross, our sins are forgiven (Romans 3:23-25) and we are reconciled to God (Colossians 1:20). For us, eternal life has begun - for eternal life is not just life going on for ever beyond physical death but life enjoyed for ever in fellowship with God. Eternal life is to know God - and to know Jesus - (John 17:3), as a friend who knows and loves and cares for us as well as the Lord and God whom we worship and adore. As one of the most well known verses in the Bible puts it, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son - Jesus - so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life (John 3:16).

In 2004 Immanuel Church celebrated its 150th Anniversary, and was a partner church in the just 10 south london mission with evangelist J. John.

'Promoting the whole mission of the Church.'

That phrase, at the top of the page, are the words at the heart of our object as a Church and charity - 'Promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical' - as laid down in the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) measure 1956!

Some long legal words - but embodying an important purpose. They appear in our entry in the Register of Charities.
