Marion Gray writes....

How Immanuel & St Andrew supports the wider church

As you know David, Jenny and I are Readers. This is a national ministry for which people have to be selected and then trained through a 3-year training course. To become a Reader you have to go through a rigorous selection procedure, and it is part of my ministry to act as Director of Reader Selection for Southwark Diocese. My responsibilities include appointment and training of selectors, arranging and running the selection conferences (usually 4 a year) and dealing with all the correspondence and paperwork, as well as encouraging candidates to come forward and helping them through the process. The year starts in September with an Open Evening for anyone interested in learning about Reader ministry, and continues through to August when the last bits of admin are completed after the final selection conference.

For the last nine years, since I was licensed, I have been part of the Reader Training staff team. I teach three modules of the course – History of Mission, History of Anglicanism, and Christian Doctrine. This means being present on Thursday evenings and an occasional Saturday, during term time, in the autumn and summer terms. There are also assignments to mark and lecture preparation to deal with. Since the course became accredited by Christ Church Canterbury University there are also Board of Studies meetings several times a year.

As Director of Selection I am a member of the Southwark Diocesan Readers Board. We meet half a dozen times a year and also organise the annual licensing and re-licensing events. At the insistence of the Board I stood for election to the national body for Reader ministry, the Central Readers Council. In 2010 I was elected to serve a 5-year term of office, so now have the opportunity to contribute at national level to the debate regarding the future of Reader ministry in this country. This year I was asked to take over as Chair of the Editorial committee of the CRC – we are responsible for the production of the national Reader magazine, which is issued quarterly.

This all adds up to a lot of work, which I am thankful to be able to do in the name of Immanuel & St Andrew.

Our Worship.

Immanuel's normal pattern of services is shown on the services page, where you can also find more information about our worship and other activities. Our main service on Sunday is at 10:00am. For more details of services in the coming week and any changes to the regular pattern go to Immanuel Parish Diary. See also 'OPEN DOOR', the weekly news and notice sheet, available at the church. A copy is usually posted beside the church door.

Please note that the 10:00am All Age Service (and the 9:00am Holy Communion which precedes it), are normally on the THIRD Sunday of each month. On the other Sundays (1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of each month) we have Holy Communion at 10:00am. The arrangements are shown on the services page.

Junior Church groups normally meet during the first part of the 10:00am service on the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of each month in school term time (i.e. NOT during school holidays). All children are welcome to come along to the Junior Church groups. If any children have allergies or special needs please would parents/guardians make sure that the Junior Church leaders are made aware of them. Thank you.

If you began coming to Immanuel and St Andrew's only recently and would like to know more, please ask one of the clergy, wardens or stewards for a 'Welcome Card'.
